“Is my story right for The Braid?”
Got a Story? You Belong Here.
If you’re asking yourself whether your experience is “Jewish enough” for our stage, we have a quick answer for you: it is.
A story doesn’t need to feature a Passover seder, a Bar Mitzvah, or a Friday night Shabbat dinner to be deeply Jewish. Jewish identity is woven into the subtle fabric of everyday life; in how we love, struggle, persevere, question, heal, and connect with one another. You’d be amazed at the profound Jewish values and cultural resonance buried deep inside memories you might assume are completely ordinary. If it mattered to you, it matters to us.
“But I’m not a writer…”
Maybe your hesitation isn’t the memory itself, but putting it into words. You might be thinking, “I’m not a professional writer, so I can’t write this.”
Here is our secret: we don’t need you to be a playwright.
Our team of experienced editors and theatre artists is here to help adapt, edit, and polish your piece so it shines on stage, with professional actors bringing your words to life. We can help trim the prose, shape the structure, and bring out the dramatic rhythm.
“But I’m not Jewish…”
That’s perfectly OK! While we prefer the work to have some Jewish content or Jewish resonance, our writers do not have to identify as Jewish themselves.
The magic ingredient that only you possess
There is one thing our team of theatre professionals cannot do: we cannot manufacture authentic, real-life human truth.
We can craft dialogue, but we can’t generate the unique, hilarious, heartbreaking, or eye-opening moment that actually happened to you. That spark of raw, lived experience is the magic ingredient—and only you possess it.
So don’t be shy, and don’t let self-doubt quiet your voice. Your story might be the exact moment of connection someone in our audience needs to hear to realize they aren’t alone.
