I was walking my dog Louie – or he was walking me –
When he spotted a squirrel with a delicious acorn locked in its tiny mouth.
Louie lunged, nearly ripping my arm from its socket.
“Sit” I said, pulling on his leash. “Stay!” But nothing worked,
Social Distancing obviously had no meaning for him.
I pulled out his squeaky toy, and got his attention
As the nervous squirrel scurried up the tree.
We continued down the sidewalk.
I watched Louie sniff flowers, raise his leg
and celebrate the glory of the day.
For one fleeting moment I forgot about the impending plague
And felt the sunlight bathing us in its warm, eternal embrace.
Thank God for dogs.
